In this short talk, part of an interview recorded in 1975, Maharishi defines what makes TM so effective. It’s a point he stressed many times – TM works because it relies solely on the natural tendency of the mind. Once it knows how to – and this is the crucial point – once it knows how to, the mind will settle down into silence, into what Maharishi calls a state of least excitation of consciousness.
Like water flowing down a slope, like an object falling through the pull of gravity, the human mind will settle down easily and naturally. All that is needed is to know how to do it.

Natural, easy and universal
Maharishi’s Transcendental Meditation technique allows the mind to turn inward while remaining awake. That’s all it does. The rest, the settling down of the mind, the growth of inner silence, the dissolving of boundaries, all this is just a consequence of turning the mind inward and remaining awake. It’s all so natural. And because it’s natural, it’s easy and universal.
Hundreds of people have learnt the Transcendental Meditation technique at the London TM Centre in Victoria. The universal reaction is “I didn’t realize this technique would be so easy and so effective”.
The source of thought
It’s not difficult to make something complicated. Especially when dealing with the mind and consciousness, it’s very easy to complicate matters. Maharishi’s genius was to understand the essence of how the mind works. Then he applied this understanding to a practical technique.
The mind, he says, likes happiness and turns towards happiness whenever it can. Each of our thoughts has energy and it has intelligence. Once the mind has turned inward, it flows spontaneously to the source of thought because that is where it finds its fulfillment and the greatest happiness. The TM technique opens the door to inner peace and a fulfilled life.
